This year Martin Luther King Day is on Monday January 21. This day lets us celebrate the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr. As it is a federal holiday, there is lots going on so there is also lots of choice as to how to spend the day. Below we are highlighting just a few of the happenings for families in the city.
SATURDAY JANUARY 19 Ice Festival @ Central Park Sip on hot chocolate while watching Okamoto Studio carve Belvedere Castle and its surrounding landscape out of ice and learn about the geologic history of Central Park. Scandinavian Sing-Along @ Scandinavia House Scandinavia holds a treasure-trove of children’s songs and games. Danish musician Vibe Normann will introduce children to English versions of these songs, play musical games, and perform a selection of songs. Come prepared to move, dance, imagine, and sing your heart out!
Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Walcott updated New Yorkers on the potential School Bus Strike. Unfortunately, it now looks like the union-Local 1181 of the Amalgamated Transit Union- will go on strike this week, possibly Wednesday.
If they decide to strike, it would jeopardize the education and safety of the more than 150,000 students who take school buses every single day, in a year when students have already missed a week or more of school because of Hurricane Sandy.
