Whale Camp

Whale Camp

It’s your first day at Whale Camp!! What can you expect?
Wake up, eat a delicious breakfast, and pack for your day on the water and in the field. Our first stop is a whale watch, where you’ll travel out to sea, observe and collect important behavioral data about whales and seabirds, and conduct a plankton tow to gather a sample of plankton for later investigation. After our boat trip, have a picnic at one of our favorite beaches. In the afternoon, go on a cliffside hike to explore the rich geological history of Grand Manan Island down to a secluded beach. We pick up beach stones, shaped by the Bay of Fundy for thousands or millions of years, each telling a story of the history! Back at camp, we have free time, dinner, and play games before returning to our plankton samples to learn more about the incredible organisms that support the food web and diets of our local whales. Get ready for another day of adventure tomorrow!

About our program
Located on beautiful Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy, Whale Camp is a marine science camp dedicated to experiential learning. Our oceanfront campus sits above a sand beach that disappears with each high tide, optimizing the opportunities to learn about the dynamic marine ecology of the Bay of Fundy as well as the coastal ecology and human stories of Grand Manan Island. Since 1984, our program has focused on hands-on, discovery-oriented marine science activities to increase awareness and understanding of these living systems and the global systems of our oceans. Campers are empowered and encouraged to build confidence and to foster connections between themselves, each other, and the natural environment.

During their time at camp, campers go on two whale watching trips per week, visit a puffin colony on Machias Seal Island, and participate in hands-on marine science lessons in the field, along with activities such as tidepooling and hiking stunning coastal trails. Our program also offers exciting options such half-day sea kayaking trips and weekend camping. We hope you’ll join us for one or two weeks this summer for an incredible experience learning about marine science, connecting with the natural world, and building lifelong friendships!
