NYC Launches Free ‘Parents’ Night Out’ Program

NYC Launches Free ‘Parents’ Night Out’ Program

New York City parents are being given the chance to enjoy a few hours to themselves this summer, thanks to a new city-sponsored Parents’ Night Out program offering free childcare for hundreds of families.

Taking place on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 4–8pm, the pilot program will provide free supervised childcare for up to 500 children ages 6–13 at participating NYC recreation centers.

The idea is simple: parents and caregivers can enjoy a little time off — whether that means going out for dinner, catching a movie, running errands or simply taking a well-earned break — while children enjoy a fun-filled evening in a safe, supervised setting.

The program will take place at one recreation center in each borough, with 100 spots available at each location. Participating centers include Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center in Brooklyn, Highbridge Recreation Center in Manhattan, Al Oerter Recreation Center in Queens, Kwame Ture Recreation Center in the Bronx and Greenbelt Recreation Center on Staten Island.

Activities will vary by location, but families can expect an evening of fun programming led by NYC Parks staff, including options such as sports, arts and crafts, and nature-based activities. Dinner will also be provided for participating children.

Spaces are limited and registration is required in advance. There will be no walk-ins, and places will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
