Greene Hill School is an independent and progressive pre-K through 8th grade school in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn, dedicated to developing expansive learners open to a lifetime of self-awareness, high ambition and deep empathy. Our students benefit from small classes, devoted and attentive teachers who truly know them and respect their individuality. Our interdisciplinary curriculum weaves social justice into an academically challenging and rich program that emphasizes the importance of critical thinking, and is rooted in research on how kids learn best. In addition to core academics, all students participate in a range of visual arts, music, health, wellness, and movement classes, as well as community building.
A unique part of our curriculum is Open Work, a time for students to apply themselves to a topic or project of their choosing. Starting in the 4s, this daily practice develops independence and teaches kids to take ownership over their work. Open Work helps to build stamina for longer and more challenging academic projects, and helps kids get to know themselves better as learners. As kids grow and move onto more complicated work, they are encouraged to share their ideas with their peers and as a result, they become adept at both giving and receiving feedback, a skill they use extensively in their academic classes as they mature.
Greene Hillteachers take kids seriously and partner with their students to foster growth—academic, emotional and physical, resulting in kids that are invested and engaged in their learning. Students are provided with ample opportunities for posing questions, formulating and testing ideas through hands-on experience, and examining theories through rich discussion. Additionally, all Greene Hill kids have outside time every day, participate in service learning and truly get to know themselves as learners in small, respectful classes that allow them to take academic risks. Greene Hill kids are excited about learning and love coming to school. Our graduating 8th graders go on to a wide range of excellent independent, specialized, public, and boarding schools. Most of all, they believe in themselves and truly know who they are.
As part of our commitment to economic diversity, GHS offers a sliding scale tuition model, whereby families fall into one of seven tuition tiers. Our tuition model differs from a financial aid model in that every family may opt to participate and pay the tuition amount that is found to be most appropriate for that family. This model sets us apart from most independent schools and ensures that our community remains economically diverse.
Lower and Middle School in-person Tours begin on September 26 and continue weekly throughout the fall. Please self-register through Ravenna. For any questions, please email admissions@greenehillschool.org.
