As a parent with a child enrolled in public school, your life revolves around the academic calendar. Numerous preschools in the NYC area also follow the public school schedule, adding to the importance of being aware of key dates.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, it’s wise to save and refer to the calendar released by the New York City Department of Education.


Thursday, September 5:
First day of school for all students

Thursday, October 3-Friday, October 4:
Rosh Hashanah (schools closed)

Monday, October 14:
Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples Day (schools closed)

Friday, November 1:
Diwali (schools closed)

Tuesday, November 5:
Election Day (students do not attend school)

Monday, November 11:
Veterans Day (schools closed)

Thursday, November 28-Friday, November 29:
Thanksgiving Recess (schools closed)

Tuesday, December 24-Wednesday, January 1:
Winter Recess (schools closed)

Monday, January 20:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (schools closed)

Wednesday, January 29:
Lunar New Year (schools closed)

Monday, February 17-Friday, February 21:
Midwinter Recess (schools closed)

Monday, March 31:
Eid al-Fitr (schools closed)

Monday, April 14-Friday, April 18:
Spring Recess (schools closed)

Monday, May 26:
Memorial Day (schools closed)

Thursday, June 5:
Eid al-Adha/Anniversary Day (schools closed)

Friday, June 6:
Clerical Day; no classes for students attending 3-K, Pre-K, elementary schools, middle schools, K–12 schools, and standalone D75 programs

Thursday, June 19:
Juneteenth (schools closed)

Thursday, June 26:
Last day of school for all students.


Please note that on days when school buildings are closed due to inclement weather or other emergencies, all students and families should plan on participating in remote learning.
