01 Oct The Co-op School Preschool
At The Co-op School’s Preschool, we emphasize play and social-emotional learning as the foundation of our approach. Children thrive when they are nurtured and encouraged through open, free play. Our goal is to equip children with the tools to navigate new social experiences—whether that’s forming friendships, learning to share, or speaking up in a group.
Guided by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we believe every child is capable, competent, and full of curiosity. According to Christie Gallagher, Associate Head of School and Preschool Division Head: “our play-based curriculum focuses on social-emotional development, using hands-on activities to naturally introduce early academic concepts. In our classrooms, the process of learning is prioritized over the product, allowing children to explore and grow at their own pace.”
Our preschoolers also participate in a variety of “specials,” including Yoga, Music, and Mindfulness, Movement, Creative Making, and Science. Each subject is taught by a specialist and introduces diverse role models from underrepresented communities, broadening students’ perspectives.
We proudly integrate an Anti-Bias Curriculum, which invites students to engage in age-appropriate conversations about gender, race, socio-economic class, ability, and social justice. Christie adds “Through our “Movers and Shakers” program, we introduce visionary role models who inspire resilience and critical thinking, encouraging students to imagine a better world.”
Parents and caregivers are essential members of our Co-op community. Whether chaperoning a field trip or sharing cultural stories in the classroom, our families are active partners in their children’s learning, contributing to the vibrant, inclusive environment that makes our school so special.
Take a Tour, we would love to show you our school.
