Teen Copyists is a focused studio program for ages 15–18 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, designed for teens who are serious about developing their drawing and painting skills. This multi-day workshop introduces students to the long-standing artistic practice of copying masterworks as a way to sharpen technique, observation, and visual understanding.

Participants work in a studio setting at The Met, studying artworks from the museum’s collection and recreating them using guided instruction from professional museum educators. The emphasis is on careful observation, proportion, color, and composition, rather than casual experimentation. Teens gain insight into how artists historically learned their craft and how those methods still apply today.

In addition to studio work, teens gain a deeper understanding of how artists learn by studying existing works. The program introduces participants to close-looking techniques used in formal art training, helping them analyse proportion, structure, and detail. This analytical approach supports stronger independent work and is especially valuable for students preparing for advanced art courses or portfolio reviews and future creative study pathways.

This program is best suited to high school students with a strong interest in art, including those building portfolios or considering art, design, or architecture studies. The structured format allows teens to spend sustained time working on a single piece, receiving feedback and refining their work over multiple sessions.
