The German-American School Manhattan (GSM) is an international bilingual IB World School in the heart of Tribeca, offering a warm and inspiring educational experience for children from Preschool (2s–4s) through Grade 5.

At GSM, we believe that a lifelong love of learning starts in the earliest years. Our Preschool provides a nurturing, playful, and stimulating environment where our youngest learners are encouraged to explore, discover, create, and ask questions.

As part of our International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme, inquiry-based learning begins right from the start. Through purposeful play, hands-on exploration, stories, music, art, movement, and age-appropriate projects, children make meaningful connections with the world around them while developing important social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills.

Growing Up Bilingual

Bilingualism at GSM is not simply a subject – it is part of everyday life. Our Preschool students experience German and English naturally throughout their school day, building language skills through play, routines, conversations, songs, stories, and meaningful interactions.

Our bilingual environment welcomes children from a variety of linguistic backgrounds. Prior knowledge of German is not required. Children learn from and with one another while developing confidence, cultural awareness, and an appreciation for different languages and perspectives.

From Preschool to Grade 5 – and Beyond

GSM offers families the opportunity to continue their child’s bilingual education beyond Preschool in our Lower School through Grade 5. Students build on the strong foundations established during their early years through an engaging bilingual and inquiry-driven academic program.

Our partnership with Green Ivy Pine Street School also provides GSM graduates with a supported pathway into an IB middle school environment, creating continuity beyond elementary school.

At GSM, children don’t just learn two languages. They learn to think, explore, communicate, and see the world from different perspectives.
