13 Aug MTA Expands Open Stroller Spaces Across NYC Buses

Any NYC parent who has ever tried to fold a stroller, hold a child and get onto a bus at the same time will appreciate this one.

The MTA is rolling out designated open-stroller spaces across every local and Select Bus Service bus in the city, with all 5,800+ buses expected to have one by the end of 2026.

Each bus will have space for one open stroller near the rear door, separate from the wheelchair area at the front. Just look for the stroller symbol outside the bus before boarding. If the space is already taken — or your stroller doesn’t fit — you’ll still need to fold it.

Parents using the space should keep their child strapped in, apply the stroller brakes and keep the aisle clear.

For families navigating NYC with babies and toddlers, it’s a simple change — but one that could make everyday bus journeys a whole lot easier.
