Family-Friendly Spots to See Christmas Decorations in New York City

New York City becomes a festive playground each December and families looking for child friendly holiday magic have plenty of great places to explore. From world famous Christmas trees to neighbourhood blocks covered in lights, these destinations offer some of the best holiday decorations in the city.

Rockefeller Center is one of the most iconic places to see Christmas lights in New York. The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has been part of the city’s holiday tradition since the 1930s and is lit in a public ceremony in late November or early December. Combined with the skating rink and decorated plaza, it creates one of the most memorable seasonal scenes for families.

A short walk away, the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park offers a large ice skating rink, festive lighting and an open air holiday market. Kids love watching skaters glide under the lights and families can enjoy warm treats from the market stalls. Not far from there, Radio City Music Hall features a brightly lit and well photographed holiday display on its famous marquee.

Fifth Avenue remains one of the best free experiences for families during the season. Storefront holiday windows, building facades decorated with lights and festive displays make it ideal for a stroller friendly walk. Just off the avenue, the Plaza Hotel decorates its entrance and courtyard tree, which has become a favourite holiday photo spot.

Another popular destination is Lotte New York Palace Hotel, known for its large Christmas tree in the courtyard that attracts many visitors. For families interested in dining surrounded by ornaments and lights, Rolf’s German Restaurant in Manhattan is known for its elaborate indoor Christmas décor. It is a sit down restaurant, so it may be most suitable for families with older children.

For a modern holiday lights experience, Hudson Yards decorates its indoor and outdoor areas with a large scale display featuring thousands of lights that illuminate the shops and public spaces. The Vessel is lit up this year for the first time.

Explore beyond Manhattan and head to Brooklyn’s Dyker Heights, where many homes in the neighbourhood are known for their extravagant and brightly lit outdoor decorations. Inflatable characters, toy soldiers, reindeer and detailed lighting displays draw visitors from across the city.

In Lower Manhattan, the South Street Seaport area features seasonal decorations and a Christmas tree set among cobblestone streets and waterfront views. Zuccotti Park also displays holiday lights and decorated trees, making it a peaceful spot to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Other places families will enjoy include Macy’s Herald Square, where the exterior and holiday windows transform for the season, and the Fox Square Christmas tree display in Midtown.

New York City offers countless ways to experience the magic of the holidays with children. Whether you choose a classic landmark, a neighbourhood walk or a sparkling modern installation, a Christmas lights adventure can become a tradition your family looks forward to every year.

Enjoy exploring the city and have a wonderful festive season.
