Summer Reading 2012

Today sees the start of New York City’s Summer Reading 2012 – what better way to keep your little ones reading throughout the school holidays.

All over New York, libraries will be hosting parties, programs, and celebrations for summer reading through Labor Day. Visit their dedicated website which has a great walk-through video showing you how to participate.
This program has been launched to prevent what educational experts call “Summer Slide.” This experience is unique to children and teens who don’t read over the summer and therefore lose a percentage of the literacy skills they gained during the school year. Summer Reading programs aim to encourage children and teens to read for pleasure over the summer so they can start school prepared to learn in the fall.
At www.summerreading.org your kids can share, comment, win badges, check out what their friends are listening to and much more. All you need to register is your library card, and by the end of the summer your kids will have an online bookshelf to share with their friends and family.
