Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Family Activities in NYC

This year Martin Luther King Day is on Monday January 21. This day lets us celebrate the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr.
As it is a federal holiday, there is lots going on so there is also lots of choice as to how to spend the day. Below we are highlighting just a few of the happenings for families in the city.

Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo @ The New Victory Theater

Erth takes tremendous pride in continuing to provide an opportunity that is both spectacular and intimate. Their dinosaurs are magnificent, but as people-powered puppets rather than animatronic inventions, they also can respond instantly to audiences for a unique experience. Hatchlings might beg for a quick scratch behind an ear or the T-Rex could start a teeth-gnashing contest with a brave kid. We can’t wait to meet them all and hope you will join us for a personal prehistoric adventure!

Watson Adventures’ Grand Central Scramble Family Scavenger Hunt @ Grand Central Terminal

Join Watson Adventures on a unique scavenger hunt for adults and kids 7 & up!
Kids and adults work together to uncover the secrets of this amazing train station. To win, you’ll have to go nuts in the Whispering Gallery, learn a secret about the stars, find TV celebs in the food court, stand on fish under an upside-down tree in the Grand Central Market, learn the arrival time of a “ghost” train and think like Willy Wonka in the Transit Museum Gallery. Kids must be accompanied by an adult, and vice versa.

Martin Luther King Jr Day @ DiMenna Children’s History Museum

Hear Tonya Bolden read from her new children’s book Emancipation Proclamation: Lincoln and the Dawn of Liberty and celebrate the 150th anniversary of this essential part of American history.

MLK Day Crafternoon! @ Brooklyn Craft Farm

The kids are out of school on Martin Luther King Day, perfect opportunity to bring them to craft class! In this workshop we will be making magical hanging mobiles (get in touch with your inner Calder!), and designing one of a kind warm winter hats (monster hat? flower hat? penguin hat? kitten hat? crafter’s choice!).

Whatever you decide to do, we wish you a wonderful long weekend!
