08 May The Calhoun School
Calhoun School, preschool-12th, offers a hands-on “learning by doing” curriculum, embracing the individuality of our students while supporting intellectual, emotional and social growth.
Why emphasize learning by doing? While the passive learner takes information, stores it and attempts to summon it for tests and quizzes, the engaged learner experiences and discovers, enabling her to connect new information to prior learning.
In lower grades, Calhoun students create and build in our STEAM Discovery Lab; cook, dance and sing in Spanish class; ask questions, research and document in social studies; and manipulate math materials to develop abstract thinking.
By senior year, students have taken a broad base of required courses and also chosen electives that speak to their passions. They’ve created knowledge, insight, beauty or function through our multi-disciplinary Junior Workshop program; made a difference in their community through service learning; had opportunities to travel internationally through their modern language program; prepared for their future and developed workplace skills through an internship related to a passion.
Calhoun graduates, supported by a thorough, thoughtful college counseling process, leave Calhoun with both a strong academic foundation and the self-confidence and skill set to thrive in college and beyond.
