16 Aug Socrates Sculpture Park
Socrates Sculpture Park was once an abandoned landfill; in the 1980s, it was turned into an open studio and exhibition space for artists, as well as a neighborhood park. It is now an internationally renowned outdoor museum and park offering a host of free family programs and a place to picnic or walk along the East River with a view of Manhattan’s skyline.
The park is open 365 days from 10am till sunset.
Socrates Sculpture Park offers two programs for children and youth to experience hands-on art-making classes during the summer months. For these free programs, Socrates hires artists who have created and/or exhibited work in the park to develop and lead art-making classes, held in the park’s dedicated education area. Classes are informed by the park’s natural landscape and the individual artist’s subject matter, particular technique, and art-making process. Interaction between participants, other artists working in the park, and the artworks themselves are integral to the learning process.
